We Followed Camgirls On Twitter And All They Tweet About Is Sex

by Daniel

“Camsites” is the common parlance for the websites where sex performers strip and/or perform sexual acts on a livestream. And “camgirls” is the common parlance for these performers, although the number of men and non-binary individuals in the profession has grown in recent years. Despite the popularity of these websites, other news venues and popular media at large has all but written off off these men and women.

To try to get a look at the day-to-day life of these performers, we decided to follow the twitter accounts of the top 50 performers on www.chaturbate.com. What we discovered was truly shocking. The overwhelming majority of their tweets were directly or indirectly sexual in nature. With some tweets directly advertising their upcoming sexual performance or showing off their naked bodies. Even tweets that began nonsexual quickly took upon a clear sexual subtext. Such as one instance in which a “camgirl” implied that her disappointment with the Game of Thrones series finale would have to be satiated by a sexual act.

What this implies about this growing form of sex work is rather depressing. These performers, either by necessity or collective trauma, are living their entire lives in service of their thrice weekly sexual performances. If www.chaturbate.com really cared about their performers, they would encourage them to stop obsessing about their lengthy sexual performances and go out there and enjoy life. “Camgirls,” do yourself a favor and go to park or to a modern art museum or even a movie. We look forward to reading about it on Twitter.
