Gritty, the new mascot of the Philly Flyers, has proved quite the phenomenon over the past year. The wild, crazy look of the mascot has captivated the imagination of many on the internet. He was featured heavily on an episode of John Oliver’s program, Gritty memes are popular on Reddit and users on Twitter have added Antifa political leanings to the growing open-source lore surrounding the character. In retrospect, it was only natural that the city of Philadelphia would seek to expand and play upon the character’s popularity.
In the coming months, we will formally announce strategic partnerships with media outlets to expand the Gritty Extended Universe to include multiple new ancillary characters in the existing Gritty story. And we also have a new backstory that plays upon what we already know about Gritty. This project is obviously still in development but I am prepared to announce that Gritty had some difficult teenage years.
