Nintendo Hears Your Mario Maker 2 Complaints And They’re Looking Into Removing Tags

by Daniel

In many ways, Mario Maker 2 is exactly the game everyone expected it to be, for better and for worse. With a large number of additions, including slopes, ON/OFF switches and a new game theme in 3D World, Super Mario Maker 2 is much larger and ultimately better game than the original. But, as has been a trend with Nintendo recently, it has failed to deliver a lot of basic online features.

Super Mario Maker 2 has zero support for the Switch’s built in friend’s list. You can’t even play online with a friend or anyone not randomly selected by Nintendo. Fortunately, for those who just want to play player created levels, finding levels is a lot easier with the tag based detailed search. But it’ll still involve a lot of scrubbing through lists and copying down nine digit codes from internet forums if you want to find the real good stuff. The original Mario Maker eventually created a bookmark website for this purpose. Mario Maker 2 doesn’t even have that. And for those that want to go big on level creation, you’re currently limited to a total of 40 levels, which is less than Mario Maker’s cap. With Nintendo now charging for use of their online service, some of this stuff is just unacceptable.

In a two man press conference conducted this morning, relative Nintendo newcomer John Vignocchi and long time head of publicity for Nintendo of America Steve Gunderson hoped to establish the future for Mario Maker 2. Whilst John Vignocchi took up the bulk of the press conference highlighting specific level designers and the interesting ways in which they’ve iterated on the “Mario formula,” Steve Gunderson had this to say about future game updates.

First, I want to say we have no specific announcements here today. But I just want to make clear to everyone that we hear your complaints and we are committed to improving upon the release version of the game, which is already an excellent baseline to build upon both in terms of online functionality and gameplay. And we are going to remove tagging functionality.
