LA Alt Comedy Has A New Venue – The Woods

by Daniel

Despite the tremendous podcast boom we’ve seen recently in the Los Angeles comedy community, alternative and smaller venue comedians have always had a hard time finding physical venues in Los Angeles for their live shows. For those who don’t fit in with the UCB niche, the backroom at The Nerdmelt comic book shop was the answer to their prayers for several years. But the legendary comic book store was closed in 2016 to make way for a development that has yet to materialize. Faded, Inpatient and several of the bigger comedy showcases from Nerdmelt eventually made their way to the Blue Rooster Art Supplies back-room. But that room did not last nearly as long as Nerdmelt. In early 2019, comedy shows at Blue Roster ceased as part of a larger renovation of the storefront.

Faded and On Deck were lucky enough to secure desirable slots in the pottery classroom at the Mid-City Arts Center but Inpatient was not quite so lucky. It has been lingering, without a permanent home in Los Angeles, for almost a year. That’s what led Steve Gunderson, a 32 year-old white comedian with a podcast, to seek out a venue in the unlikeliest of places.

So I was out in Runyon Canyon, stretching out the ol’ legs, and I started noticing that there weren’t that many people around and there was really just a lot of space out there. So I followed my instincts and I actually found a nice, little spot for a show. Long term, I think it could be a great home for us. Anyway, it’s this clearing next to a big oak tree and it’s actually a pretty large space and there are a couple logs to sit on.

For those of you interested in seeing Inpatient, a unique comedy experience in which six intoxicated comedians take turns dolling out jokes and studying for the MCATs, their twitter account will announce their schedule within the next six weeks. The price of admission will be ten dollars on eventbrite and a volunteer guide will meet attendees at coordinates 34.110440, -118.350384 to guide them two miles directly east to the clearing. Alcohol beverages and reheated 7-Eleven hotdogs can be purchased on-site and, for those who can’t make it, one of Inpatient’s interns will record the audio for podcast posterity.
