Listen, we all know that feeling. You’re at a party or some other large social situation and you feel like you don’t know what to say and that everyone here is so much cooler than you. Maybe you’ll just gulp down your long island iced tea and slip out early. You put in your five minutes and, after all, it’s not like anyone would miss a loser like you at this hopping shindig.
STOP IT!
The next time you’re at a party and you’re feeling super awkward, just remember that these feelings affect everyone. Parties are scary. For everyone. Period. And this is backed up by solid science. Social anxiety disorders are extremely common and selective social society was found to be near universal in a study conducted by USC Medical School in 2015.
And a more recent study conducted by UCLA Medical School reaffirmed these finding and also found that the majority of people in “awkward social situations” were currently writing a satirical article about these feelings. So the next time you’re at a party and you’re starting to feel like you don’t belong just remember that we’re all there, right beside you. We’re all awkward at parties and we’re all currently typing this out in the wordpress apps on our phones.
