The developers of the critically acclaimed space exploration indie game “The Outer Wilds” were elated when they came into work on Monday morning to discover a massive spike in downloads of their game via Microsoft’s Gamepass service. The spike started on Friday morning and eventually settled down to slightly higher than normal levels late on Sunday evening. But, by that time, The Outer Wilds’ total Gamepass downloads had more than quadrupled. This is especially important for this small team as total downloads is one of the more important metrics that Microsoft uses to determine payouts to it’s Gamepass partners.
Steve Gunderson, who has been with the project since it’s roots as a student game, says the team is not sure what precipitated this spike but says that the team is excited and looking into it so as to best capitalize upon this new interest. Some internal theories presented include “a critical mass of near universal praise leading up GOTY year” and “our angler fish are spooky and it’s almost Halloween.”
We have reached out to Obsidian, publisher of The Outer Wilds, for comment on how this may affect a sequel order. We will keep you updated.
