The past thirty-four months have seen a stark rise in suicide rates as well as involuntary inpatient admissions due to mental health concerns. Rate increases were largest in the 18-30 bracket, who were already at a significantly increased risk of suicide and mental illness. Many have attributed this rise to social media disassociation, general cell phone overuse and violence in popular media. However, there may be a light at the end of the tunnel. The US Department of Health and Human Services has reported that the number of reported suicides, as reported to them by local agencies, has dropped to zero for the last twenty four hour period.
You can read the HHS’s initial report over at their website. Agency officials have been very careful in their announcement to say that it is still very early to draw any conclusions from all this. Only further analysis can tell if the past day is a statistical fluke or even a flaw in the system by which local agencies report local suicides.
However, in our very unscientific survey of Los Angeles area psychiatrists, several said that many of their troubled patients showed renewed optimism in their most recent session. One psychiatrist said “This patient, who should of course remain anonymous, does appear in a much improved mood. I can’t say if it’s permanent but he wants to commit to sticking it out and seeing how everything turns out.” Whatever the big tech companies and media companies have done over the last 24 hours, lets hope it continues.
