We all know this but why is it that no one talks about it? We’ve all been there. Maybe you’re buying condoms. Maybe you’re buying liquor. Or maybe you’re just buying an excessively sugary muffin. And the cashier shoots you that look, a look nearly indistinguishable from checking to see if you’re of age or a friendly smile. But we know what it was. That was the cashier passing judgement on you for your purchases.
I’ve crunched the numbers and we, the judged, are actually the majority. According to a recent survey, 77% of all grocery carts contains an item the purchaser feels self conscious about. Think about that, these cashiers are silently judging 77% of all of their customers. Sure, separately, we might be unlovable weaklings. But, together, our bulk liquor purchases are what keep these grocery stores going.
And the time has come for us to take back the power in the relationship. To let the cashiers know that we are not okay with being constantly judged. Even when we didn’t buy anything bad. We know you remember the muffin and you’re still judging me for it. I have created a hashtag to let the big grocery chains know that this judgement culture can not stand. Complaints about employees need to investigated and many employees will likely require additional training.
