Later tonight, CBS will premiere “The Masked Singer,” it’s most innovative take on the singing contest genre. The format is familiar. Twelve contestants will take turns competing in front of a panel of five judges and, each week, another contestant will be eliminated. But where things gets interesting is that all of the singers wear masks and their identities are hidden. New clues are doled out every week that hint at famous singers behind the mask. And every week, of course, the outed contestant will take off their mask to reveal that they are in fact Paul F Tompkins.
While this may seem odd to some people, it is undeniably enjoyable to watch. Early in the season, speculation from the panel guests is flying fast as they try to piece together who is behind the masks. But after the fourth Paul F Tompkins, they start to clue into the pattern and the show takes on an amazing tension. Like you’re playing a game of Rock/Paper/Scissors with an idiot. He just keeps throwing rock. And you know he has to change eventually. He can’t keep doing this. But he just keeps throwing rock. So you try to second guess him. But no, it’s another Paul F Tompkins. Okay, we’re in the final three. One of these has to not be Paul F Tompkins. They’re standing right next to each either. They just shook hands. But nope, it’s all smoke and mirrors and puppets. All twelve masked singers are just Paul F Tompkins and it’s an amazing watch.
